Maggie was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a condition in which the left side of the heart (including the aorta, aortic valve, left ventricle, and mitral valve) are underdeveloped.  Although the defect is not correctable, treatment is possible through a series of surgeries, or transplantation.  Children with Hpyoplastic Left Heart Syndrome will require a lifelong regimen of medications and follow-up with a cardiologist.
